Bold Textures Embracing Color

bold textures, embracing color

Clay on Main Gallery is pleased to present local artists Bob Hakun and Rhonda Counts in an energizing exhibition of new work. Hakun and Counts are exhibiting their own work as well as displaying some collaborations.

Hakun’s assemblages are a perfect compliment to Counts’ paintings, where color and texture collide. As Counts states, “I create a textured canvas, then I paint. My works are instantly recognizable for their unique textures. I apply various acrylic mediums onto wood panels and impress organic and inorganic elements into the mediums to mimic textures found in nature. I enjoy the mindfulness of applying color over texture. “

Hakun incorporates bits of anything and everything reimagined into intriguing sculptural works. Hakun describes his work as ”industrial primitive.” Using, “collected old, discarded items: natural like bones or wood, synthetic like wheels or gears. Old things that show the graphic effects of aging: the beauty and harshness of the breaking down over time, things that are burned, broken, rusty, crushed, bent, and have acquired an interesting patina. I want the art to have a strong emotional presence, but aesthetics are secondary to the context.”
